Yorkshire Tea's Profits Surge as Sales Break Record Barrier
Yorkshire Tea Manufacturer Posts Record Sales and Profit
The Betty's & Taylors Group, a century-old company with roots tracing back to 1886, has announced remarkable financial growth, with sales surpassing the £300 million mark for the first time in its history. The group's latest financial year saw a pre-tax profit more than double, reaching £28.8 million, as reported in newly published accounts.
For the 12 months ending October 31, 2024, the group achieved a turnover of £319.2 million, a significant increase from the prior year's £295.7 million. This upward trajectory in sales has been consistent since the company began reporting its full results to Companies House in the early 2000s.
The company's increased capacity met the growing demand for Yorkshire Tea, the flagship product made by Taylors of Harrogate, one of the group's constituents. During the year, the group produced 32.5 million metric tonnes of tea and coffee, a 15% increase over the previous year.
The group's sales in the UK grew from £275.9 million to £294 million, while in the USA, sales rose from £13.3 million to £15.7 million. Worldwide sales also saw a significant increase, with sales in the rest of the world growing from £6.4 million to £9.4 million.
Yorkshire Tea's owner also operates five Betty’s Café Tea Rooms, a craft bakery, Betty’s Cookery School, and Betty’s by Post. The group's improved trading during the year led to a substantial increase in its dividend, rising from £81.43 per share to £133.70 per share.
In a statement, the board attributed the success to operational efficiencies, investments in production capabilities, increased product availability, and a leading position in the UK black tea market, with a 40% value share. The group also pointed to its drive to increase tea sales internationally and the positive impact on overall financial performance, with sales growth of 27% achieved in the year.
In the coffee segment, Taylors of Harrogate coffee bags sales increased by eight percent to £12 million, securing a 76% share of the growing segment. With this robust financial performance, the group is poised for continued growth and expansion, both domestically and internationally.
The financial growth in the industry, as demonstrated by The Betty's & Taylors Group, can be attributed to their success in the business sector, with a record sales figure of £319.2 million achieved in the latest financial year. The increase in profits, reaching £28.8 million, was due in part to operational efficiencies and investments in production capabilities for their flagship product, Yorkshire Tea. Furthermore, the group's increased presence in the finance market via their dividend rise from £81.43 per share to £133.70 per share, highlights the economic benefits gained from their business operations.
