strictly-off-topic: The Financial Woes of the Late Rapper Xatar, Allegedly in Insolvency
Last week, the unpleasant news of Xatar's untimely demise in a Cologne apartment left the hip-hop community in shockwave. But that's not all. Rumors are swirling around about the financial troubles he supposedly faced before his untimely end.
According to a provoking report by Bild newspaper, the well-known rapper filed for personal insolvency at the Cologne local court, not too long prior to his death, somewhere around September 2024. The judgment dates back to that same month, allowing creditors until the end of November to submit their claims.
The deceased musician, whose birth name was Giware Hajabi, single-handedly filed the application for insolvency, along with a plea for debt relief. The court accepted his petition. Despite his insolvent status, Xatar was still able to carry on with his artistry and generate income. As a freelance musician, he retained every cent earned from his artistic endeavors – concert fees, streaming revenues, and royalties from song rights. These earnings were exempt from the insolvency estate, offering a route for him to regain financial stability, albeit under administrative surveillance. A chunk of his earnings would presumably have been channeled to his creditors. Xatar reportedly aimed to be debt-free within three years.
Awaiting Verdict: Toxicology Report Still Pending
On May 8, 2025, Xatar was found lifeless in the apartment of a business partner in Cologne. The preliminary autopsy showed no signs of foul play, but a toxicology report still awaits.
Infamous for his questionable behavior, Xatar had been one of the most contentious figures in the German rap scene. His life story is marked by early criminality, culminating in a highly publicized armored truck heist in 2009, which netted a trove of 120 kilograms of dental gold and jewelry worth nearly 2 million euros. Despite his escape, he was eventually apprehended in Iraq and sentenced to eight years in prison in 2010. To this day, the stolen gold remains unaccounted for and inspired a film adaptation by director Fatih Akin called "Rheingold."
Throughout his legal woes, Xatar managed to achieve commercial success – his second album was even created during his imprisonment. However, half a dozen companies in his corporate empire filed for bankruptcy in the fall of 2023, and his music label "Alles oder Nix Records" met the same fate in March 2024. At that time, Xatar confessed to being inundated by entrepreneurial responsibilities.
