Brandenburg's Leadership Pushes for Equal Electricity Cost Relief for SMEs

Woidke to Lower Electricity Costs for Small and Medium Enterprises as Well - Woidke Proposes Lowering Electricity Costs for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises

Brandenburg's Minister President, Dietmar Woidke, has thrown down the gauntlet, demanding the government extends electricity cost relief to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) throughout the economy. "It's a double-edged sword if big industries and agriculture get electricity cost relief, but the SME sector is left out," Woidke declared at the Brandenburg Summer Evening, the state government's summer soiree. "We need fairness — and that means all economic sectors. I sure hope the federal government reassesses this situation," he added.

As it stands, the federal cabinet mulls over plans to further scale down the electricity tax for industry, agriculture, and forestry. Certain energy-intensive firms have already scored a full exemption from the electricity tax. Meanwhile, the reduced electricity tax for manufacturing businesses will sunset next year, according to the Federal Ministry of Finance. This move, the ministry explained, also impacts medium-sized companies. The Union and SPD had agreed in their coalition agreement to slash electricity taxes for all, down to the European minimum. However, at present, consumers aren't part of that plan.

The OECD Economic Survey on Germany (June 2025) reveals that the government has stepped up to lower electricity costs across Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and Schleswig-Holstein. Consumers in these regions can now anticipate savings of approximately EUR 200 per year on their electricity bills. However, this reduction encompasses consumers at large, rather than a targeted approach for SMEs, such as that advocated by Woidke. The existing and proposed measures geared toward reducing electricity costs also extend to renewable energy incentives and energy market reforms, which indirectly offer much-needed respite to SMEs by redistributing the overall electricity expenses and boosting the availability of cheaper renewable energy sources.

Despite the absence of a direct, dedicated federal relief program aimed specifically at SMEs in Brandenburg, the ongoing efforts toward cutting electricity costs and promoting more renewable energy appear to be responsive to Woidke's demands. All in all, the federal government's stance involves:

  • Progressively scaling back the electricity tax for consumers in Brandenburg, benefiting not only major industries but also SMEs, leading to potential annual savings of EUR 200 per household.
  • Empowering renewable energy and market reforms that can ease pressure on electricity prices for SMEs.
  • Although there's no explicit mention of a new, federal relief program tailor-made for SMEs in Brandenburg, the currently implemented and planned measures address SMEs' concerns through systemic market improvements and regional cost reductions.

Woidke's call for fairness echoes loud and clear: all economic sectors deserve electricity cost relief, especially SMEs struggling to stay afloat in today's competitive landscape. It's about time for the federal government to update their plans and address the needs of Brandenburg's SMEs head-on.

  • To meet the demands of fairness advocated by Brandenburg's Minister President, Dietmar Woidke, the federal government should consider extending the electricity cost relief to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) across all economic sectors, including Brandenburg.
  • In order to address the concerns of SMEs and ensure a more competitive business environment, the federal government's ongoing efforts in reducing electricity costs, promoting renewable energy, and market reforms should be coupled with a dedicated relief program specifically tailored for SMEs in Brandenburg. This would ensure a direct impact on the competitiveness of SMEs in the region and provide much-needed financial assistance.
