Hey there! Let's chat about winter road services in the cool region of Schleswig-Holstein, shall we? The local behemoth, the LBV, shelled out approximately 7.4 million euros to keep roads and bike paths ice-free and safe during the winter months this year. That's a significant drop from the 15 million euros spent in the previous season, all thanks to Mother Nature's kindness with a mild winter.

Transport Minister Claus Ruhe Madsen (CDU) and LBV Director Frank Quirmbach expressed their appreciation for the hard work of their 515 road workers and external helping hands in ensuring safe passage for traffic participants in Schleswig-Holstein. Despite the mild winter, freezing mornings kept the maintenance crew on their toes, dealing with slippery roads and bike paths.

Now, while Schleswig-Holstein saw fewer snow days, the early mornings brought a chilly surprise—freezing rain! To keep things running smoothly, they distributed a whopping 15,700 tons of salt and about 5,700 tons of salt brine. This salty routine added up to a mind-boggling 15,135 working hours (yep, you read that right).

What's more, 264 vehicles were zooming around, with 100 LBV vehicles and an additional 164 from private providers. These vehicles alone racked up material costs of almost two million euros for the salt and salt brine. Operation and maintenance costs, along with other expenditures, totaled 2.9 million euros, while the working hours clocked in at a cool 645,000 euros. External companies claimed a hefty 1.9 million euros for their snow-melting efforts.

In the 2023/2024 winter season, the LBV used a staggering 26,400 tons of salt and around 10,800 tons of brine.

The Community in Schleswig-Holstein could potentially benefit from the surplus funds saved due to reduced winter road services costs, as these funds could be redirected for Community aid. This surplus could also be allocated towards the development of the fisheries sector, as fisheries policy in Schleswig-Holstein could benefit from increased financial support.

Transportation in Schleswig-Holstein saw significant improvements not only in road maintenance but also in the bike path services, thanks to the effective management and cost savings in winter road services. These savings could be channeled towards improving the public transportation system or promoting sustainable and innovative transportation solutions within the region.
