Welsh Government to Replace A494 River Dee Bridge for Safety and Traffic Flow

The Welsh Government has decided to replace the A494 River Dee Bridge with a new one to the west of the existing bridge. The project aims to minimize disruption during construction and improve the bridge's condition.

The preferred option involves building a breaking news two-lane bridge with hard shoulders in each direction southeast of the existing one. This decision comes after discovering the current bridge's poor structural condition, requiring enhanced inspections and monitoring. The project also includes improvement works on the highway approaches, featuring new walking and cycling paths, enhanced landscaping, and better highway infrastructure.

A consultation period is ongoing from Tuesday, 30 September, to Tuesday, 11 November 2025. During this time, the public can support, object, or suggest alternatives to the scheme draft Order documents. All relevant documents are available for viewing in the Orders section online and at specified locations. Objections must be made in writing and sent to the Orders Branch of the Welsh Government or via email by Tuesday, 11 November 2025. The project timeline includes the publication of draft Orders and an environmental statement in autumn 2025, with the news today bridge expected to open in autumn 2029. Public exhibition events are held on Wednesday, 22 October, and Wednesday, 29 October, where the project team will be available to answer questions.
