Weekend Rail Event Kicks Off - "Rail Day" Commences

The fourth edition of the "Day of the Rail" is set to captivate Germany from September 16 to 18, 2023. This three-day celebration, taking place a week before the 200th anniversary of the first railway journey worldwide, promises an array of exciting events focused on rail traffic.

The events are a collaborative effort between the Federal Ministry of Transport, the industry association Allianz pro Schiene, and regional railway associations, including BahnEisenbahn Verkehrs Nachrichten (EVN) in Coburg.

Over 300 events, centred around railways, are taking place across Germany. These events include construction site and workshop tours, station festivals, and special train rides. The aim is to showcase the vast range and enduring fascination of the railway.

The "Day of the Rail" has been an annual event since 2022, coordinated by Allianz pro Schiene, and this year, it is being organised in conjunction with the "European Mobility Week", which runs from September 16 to 22, 2023.

In his opening speech, Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder underscored the need for investment in the rail network in the coming years. He emphasised the importance of making the rail system more reliable, safer, and more modern. Schnieder also highlighted that the "Day of the Rail" aims to put the fascinating mode of transport and the many people behind it in the spotlight.

Dirk Flege, managing director of Allianz pro Schiene, expressed the frustration of the German public with current delays and cancellations in rail services. He stated that the 'Day of the Rail' aims to showcase the enthusiasm and conviction of many employees working for the climate-friendly system of rail. Flege added that a future-proof railway is necessary, which requires a clear plan for maintenance, new construction, and expansion, and a reliable, long-term financial commitment.

In Coburg, the event is being held on the site of the former freight yard, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the history and evolution of rail transport. Schnieder and Flege, along with other dignitaries, opened the special weekend of events on September 16, 2023, marking the start of this exciting celebration of rail travel in Germany.

It is clear that the "Day of the Rail" is more than just a series of events; it is a testament to the enduring allure of rail travel and a call to action for a more reliable, efficient, and sustainable rail network in Germany and beyond.
