Navigating NRW Motorways This Weekend: Be Ready for Some Detours and Congestion
Weekend road closures imminent - Traffic gridlock forecasted - Weekend closures on highways anticipated, leading to traffic congestion
Hey there! Let me fill you in on some road trips you might be embarking on soon in the North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) region. Buckle up, because the next few days could bring some unexpected twists and turns!
Starting this weekend, motorists may face traffic disruptions on several major motorways across the region. Here's what you need to know:
Motorway Madness Around Cologne, Ruhr, and Sauerland
From Friday evening through Monday morning, some crucial routes will be closed. In Cologne, specifically, the A1 between Leverkusen-West and Leverkusen will be off-limits due to construction work on the new Leverkusen Rhine Bridge.
If you're heading towards Dortmund on the A1 at Leverkusen, you'll need to take a detour onto the A59 towards Düsseldorf and the A46, as suggested by the Autobahn GmbH.
On the flip side, drivers going to Koblenz on the A1 will be able to proceed only as far as the Leverkusen interchange. From there, they'll need to take the A59 towards Düsseldorf to the Leverkusen-Rheindorf junction, then the A59 back to the Leverkusen-West interchange, before they can finally continue on the A1 towards Koblenz.
Alternative Route: River Crossing with Rheinfähre
To dodge the detours, road users can opt for the Rheinfähre, a ferry service between Leverkusen-Hitdorf and Cologne-Langel. The service will be available on Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00 to 17:00.
Higher Chance of Traffic Jams
But there's a gloomy prediction from the ADAC Nordrhein: increased risk of traffic jams. While the disruptions are scheduled for the weekend, there are numerous construction sites on the so-called Cologne Ring motorways, increasing the chances of pesky traffic jams. A spokesperson from ADAC Nordrhein made the warning clear.
More Detours and Closures
Elsewhere in the region, the A52 between Düsseldorf and Essen will be closed due to demolishing a pedestrian bridge. At the Kreuz Herne interchange, the A42 will be closed for the weekend too, as the Autobahn company needs to change the traffic guidance within an existing major construction site.
Additionally, on the A45 near Lüdenscheid, drivers heading north will face a restriction behind the permanent closure at the Rahmedetal Bridge, due to renovation work on the Brunsbecke Bridge. The northbound route towards Dortmund will be closed between Lüdenscheid-Nord and Hagen-Süd.
Stay Updated and Plan Ahead
With all these closures, it's a good idea to stay on top of the latest traffic updates or consult official announcements from NRW’s transportation authorities for accurate and up-to-date information about bridge construction in Leverkusen, Cologne, the Ruhr region, Düsseland, and Koblenz. And hey, enjoy the ride, no matter how twisty it might get!

- Given the weekend bridge construction in Leverkusen, motorists may encounter traffic disruptions on the A1 between Leverkusen-West and Leverkusen, resulting in detours onto the A59 towards Düsseldorf and A46.
- As an alternative to the motorway detours, road users can consider the Rheinfähre ferry service between Leverkusen-Hitdorf and Cologne-Langel, available on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00.
- Additionally, finance for the construction of new railways and public-transit can significantly reduce automotive traffic congestion, promoting a more efficient and eco-friendly transportation system within the NRW region over the long term.
