Nigeria's Davis Iyasere Ascends West African Insurance Ranks
Step forward, Davis Ebelechukwu Iyasere! The West African Insurance Companies Association (WAICA) has tapped this diligent powerhouse as their new Secretary-General. This placing follows the departure of former Secretary General, Mr. William Coker.
This unparalleled achievement makes Iyasere the inaugural Nigerian to stand in the esteemed WAICA position, a milestone achieved in the organization's 50-year history.
Before seizing this substantial role, Iyasere honed his professional prowess as Deputy-Director, steering Corporate Communications, Human Resources, and Administration at the Nigerian Insurers Association. Over nearly two decades, Iyasere captivated his colleagues with his dedication to duty, allegiance to the association's ideals, and pursuit of excellence.
His ascent through the ranks was no walk in the park; intrinsic hard work, a robust character, dedication to perfection, humility, and mental acumen played crucial roles in his meteoric rise. Joining the association in 2004 as Corporate Affairs Manager, he swiftly progressed to his latest position through unwavering perseverance.
Before embarking on this impressive career in insurance, Iyasere honed his reporting skills as a freelance sports journalist for Vanguard newspaper, the National Times, and ultimately The Guardian. His tenure at Sporting Champion, Nigeria's highest-selling weekly sports newspaper, led to his recruitment as corporate affairs manager for the Nigerian Insurers Association in 2004.
Educated at Comprehensive High School, Igbodo, in Delta State, he served as Senior Prefect during his time there. His educational journey continued at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Ogba-Lagos, where he earned a professional diploma in Journalism. Following this, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Arts from the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, holding the ranking of a second-class upper division student and leading the Faculty of Arts Students Association (FASA) as president.
His insatiable thirst for knowledge saw him further his education, earning a Master's degree in communication studies from Lagos State University and a second Master's degree in industrial and labor relations from the University of Lagos. Currently, he is pursuing a Doctorate degree in public relations at Babcock University, Ilishan-Ogun State.
Multilingual and an active member of various professional bodies and associations, Iyasere is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Advertising Practitioners Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON), Chartered institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM), Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN), Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), USA, and the Association of Corporate Governance Professionals of Nigeria.
Boasting a broad scope, WAICA represents insurance and reinsurance companies, as well as brokers, in Anglophone West Africa. In his capacities as Secretary-General and our designated contact person, Iyasere will oversee insurance institution activities in Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia. Stationed at the Association's Accra, Ghana, secretariat, he will ensure the smooth functioning and growth of the industry across the region.
