Visa renewal in Dubai is now linked to traffic fine settlements during a test period.
In a bid to promote compliance with traffic laws and improve administrative efficiency, the authorities in Dubai have introduced a pilot system that links the payment of traffic fines directly to the issuance or renewal of residency visas.
The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) and the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) have collaborated to implement this system, which electronically ties visa-related transactions to the Dubai Police Traffic Fines System. This means that any unresolved traffic fines will trigger a prompt requiring settlement prior to visa processing.
Residents are required to settle all outstanding traffic fines, either fully or through instalment plans, before they can proceed with renewing or applying for their residency visas. Payment flexibility is provided via platforms like RTA’s Tabby, and the system is currently in a pilot phase, gradually being implemented across select visa service centers, excluding Dubai Airport’s GDRFA center.
Lt Gen Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, the Director General of the GDRFA in Dubai, emphasized that the system is designed to offer residents an opportunity to settle their fines rather than a barrier to visa renewal or issuance. He also noted that the system is not intended to be punitive but educational, aiming to remind residents to pay their fines and follow traffic rules.
The system has been designed to provide a user-friendly experience for residents, with those approaching relevant departments for visa services being guided through the payment process. The initiative aims to encourage residents to follow traffic rules and settle overdue fines, ultimately fostering a safer and more compliant driving environment in Dubai.
This is not the first time authorities have explored linking outstanding fines with government services. In 2014, the Ministry of the Interior stated that visas of individuals with outstanding traffic fines would not be renewed. However, the current system differs in its approach, offering flexibility and tailoring guidance to each resident's case.
While the system is still in the pilot phase, it represents a significant step towards encouraging compliance with traffic rules in Dubai. As the system continues to be rolled out, residents are encouraged to settle their traffic fines to ensure a smooth renewal or application process for their residency visas.
