Viktor Gerashchenko, a legendary Russian banker, energetic in the banking sphere from 1960 onwards, had a noteworthy career. Born on December 21, 1937, in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), he came from a family of bankers. Gerashchenko graduated from the Moscow Financial Institute in 1960 and worked his way up within the USSR State Bank[1][2].

Known for serving as the chairman of the board of the regulator[2], he also led the Central Bank of Russia twice, and the State Bank of the USSR twice[2]. His tenure, however, was marked by profound controversies, including the introduction of policies that resulted in hyperinflation due to excessive money supply and low-interest loans, which earned him the unflattering title of "the worst central banker in the world" from The Economist magazine[1][2].

Despite the questionable aspects of his career, Gerashchenko's passing on May 11, 2025, was met with a solemn and reverent memorial service[2][3].
