Vehicles on Roads Expand Winter Maintenance Agreement with AWL

In a move to ensure smooth traffic and safe conditions on county roads and bike paths during the winter season, County Administrator Hans-Jürgen Petrauschke has extended the outsourcing agreement with AWL for winter services. This decision comes after positive experiences with AWL's services since 2019.

The extended agreement, which covers the winter seasons from 2022/2023 through to 2024/2025, will see AWL continue to provide personnel, vehicles, and materials for snow removal and de-icing duties on county roads and public areas. This includes clearing snow, applying salt or other de-icing materials to ensure safe traffic conditions, and maintaining roads during winter weather events.

The county area is divided into five districts, each with one snow-clearing vehicle provided by AWL. The winter services will cover approximately 130 kilometers of county roads and about 100 kilometers of bike paths, ensuring comprehensive winter maintenance across the entire managed area.

In town centers, the respective municipalities remain responsible for ensuring smooth traffic even in the cold season. Two smaller vehicles are available for the bike paths to prioritise their clearance.

The winter services are guaranteed outside the readiness period of November 1 to April 30, under appropriate weather conditions and special requests. AWL ensures that the county roads are usually cleared of snow and ice before rush hour, with the bike paths being a priority.

County Administrator Hans-Jürgen Petrauschke, AWL Managing Directors Stephan Lommetz, and Dr. Matthias Welpmann signed the agreement to continue outsourcing winter services to AWL. The extension of the agreement ensures the continuation of winter services for the county roads and bike paths, providing peace of mind for residents and commuters alike.

The extended agreement with AWL, encompassing the period from 2022/2023 to 2024/2025, involves not only winter services on county roads but also the maintenance of public-transit areas during the season. This implies the provision of personnel, vehicles, and materials needed for snow removal, de-icing, and ensuring safe conditions on approximately 130 kilometers of county roads and 100 kilometers of bike paths.

The environmental industry plays a crucial role in this agreement, as AWL is responsible for implementing sustainable practices through financing eco-friendly transportation and public-transit services, ensuring a cleaner and safer transportation network for the county's residents and commuters.
