Unscrupulous Job Scheme Drains Wealth: Detailed Account of a Businessman's Rs 57 Lakh Loss
In the modern digital era, the allure of easy online income can blind even the most cautious of individuals. A 27-year-old businessman from the electrical industry recently learnt this the hard way after he was duped by a part-time job scam, losing a whopping Rs 57.75 lakh.
The saga began on August 16, when he received a tantalizing offer on Telegram from a woman named Ansuya. She promised him a part-time gig that would net him Rs 4,650 for just three hours of work each day. Seemingly too good to pass up, he dived headfirst into this supposed opportunity.
Two days later, another woman named Abhinaya swooped in, claiming association with a company called 'Mango Fashion.' She skilfully convinced him to register on their platform, where a Rs 10,000 bonus credited to his digital wallet beefed up his confidence. As he completed tasks, his digital wallet balance soared, leading him to believe the arrangement was genuine.
Emboldened by the swelling balance, Abhinaya urged him to invest further in 'Mango Fashion,' promising even better returns. Over time, the businessman transferred a total of Rs 58.06 lakh to 11 different bank accounts provided by the scammers. His digital wallet showed a whopping balance of Rs 76 lakh, including profits, but when he attempted to withdraw the money, he could only reap Rs 30,858 in two small transactions.
Realizing the bitter reality of being scammed after countless failed withdrawal attempts, he contacted the cybercrime helpline and lodged a complaint.
In another similar incident, a Mangaluru resident lost Rs 6.6 lakh due to a fake Canara Bank KYC link received on WhatsApp.
Safeguarding Yourself from such Scams
- Approach job offers with scepticism: With offers that seem too good to be true, they probably are. Verify the authenticity of the opportunity.
- Check the source: Ensure you research the company or individual offering the job before dishing out personal information or money.
- Avoid hasty investments: If you're being rushed into making substantial investments, that's a red flag.
- Utilize official channels: Always flag suspicious activities to the cybercrime helpline or local authorities to avoid falling prey to scams.
