It appears that Stranger Things' Sadie Sink may be joining the MCU, according to a recent Deadline report. This news follows the rumor that surfaced not long ago. However, with Marvel and Sony keeping mum on the development, it's a wait-and-see game for now.
The Controversial Role Speculation:
If the rumors prove true, Sink could be taking on a role in the upcoming film. But the "prevailing theory" labeling her as Jean Grey, a powerful X-Men member, leaves us scratching our heads. As much as Marvel is keen on introducing the X-Men in a new phase, it's hard to picture Sink as Jean Grey in a Spider-Man movie.
The MJ Dilemma:
Things get complicated when we consider the existing circumstances. Sink's casting would traditionally suggest a role as Mary Jane, yet Zendaya's character, Michelle Jones-Watson – often abbreviated to MJ – already filled that role in the previous films, leaving confusion in its wake.
Even after three films, there's still no definitive confirmation about Zendaya being the official Mary Jane in the MCU, despite her sharing the initials and having played a love interest for Peter. Different names, different looks – and no one involved has addressed the issue directly.
The Unraveling Threads:
It's possible that when Spider-Man: Homecoming started development back in 2015, a Mary Jane variant was originally planned. However, now that we're in 2026, with Peter moving onto a new storyline, it's plausible that the "real" Mary Jane is needed, alongside any other cast members (there have been whispers about Sydney Sweeney joining the film to play either Gwen Stacy or Felicia Hardy, setting the stage for a potential love triangle).
Spider-Man 4 before the Avengers:
Considering Spider-Man 4 is expected to hit theaters before the next two Avengers movies, where the second one, Secret Wars, is set to introduce the X-Men, it seems unlikely that Sink will play Jean Grey. Given the current situation, Sink seems far more likely to step into the shoes of the "real" Mary Jane.
