The planned U.S. delegation visit to New Delhi from August 25-29 was cancelled due to stalled talks. The visit, led by Brendan Lynch, Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for South and Central Asia, had aimed to discuss bilateral trade ties, including a possible India-US trade deal.

Despite the cancellation, the Trump administration imposed a 25% punitive levy on Indian imports from August 27, doubling overall tariffs to 50%. This move came as trade ministry data showed a drop in India's exports to the U.S. on Monday, with August exports totalling $6.86 billion, a decrease from July's $8.01 billion.

Indian trade officials, headed by Chief Negotiator Rajesh Agrawal, met with their U.S. counterparts in New Delhi to discuss the trade issues. Despite the increased tariffs, the U.S. tariff increases have not yet led to a formal response from New Delhi regarding Russian oil purchases or opening its agriculture and dairy sector for U.S. companies.

Both sides are now expected to hold a formal sixth round of trade negotiations. The next official round of trade negotiations between the USA and India is not specified with an exact date, but their teams are working to conclude talks "as soon as possible," according to statements by Indian Prime Minister Modi and US President Trump expressing optimism about the trade agreement progress as of September 2025.

Exporters have warned that the full impact of higher tariffs would be felt from September. However, following the punitive tariffs on India, US President Donald Trump took a more conciliatory tone, suggesting a willingness to find a mutually beneficial solution. It was decided to intensify efforts to achieve an early conclusion of a mutually beneficial Trade Agreement.

In a positive development, both the U.S. and India have expressed optimism about the progress of the trade agreement. With both sides committed to finding a solution, the future of U.S.-India trade relations remains uncertain but promising.
