U.S. Government Shutdown: Social Security Payments Unaffected
The U.S. government has entered its first shutdown in nearly seven years, with services and employees affected across various departments. Notably, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will continue certain operations and payments, despite the lapse in funding.
The last U.S. government shutdown occurred in 2018-2019, lasting 35 days. This time, Social Security beneficiaries can expect their payments to remain unaffected. Those who started receiving benefits before May 1997 will receive their October payments on Oct. 3, 2025, as scheduled.
During the shutdown, the SSA will retain over 45,000 employees to ensure essential services continue. However, nearly 6,200 employees are expected to be furloughed, leading to some suspensions in frontline activities like benefit verifications and IT enhancements. SSI payments will be dispersed twice in October, on Oct. 1 and Oct. 31, to accommodate the upcoming weekend.
While the U.S. government shutdown brings disruptions to many services, Social Security payments will go out as scheduled. The SSA's commitment to maintaining essential services ensures that beneficiaries continue to receive their benefits during this period.
