Transit authority, TransLink, initiates upgrading all existing Expo Line elevators.
The Expo Line Elevator Replacement Program, a significant initiative aimed at improving transit in Metro Vancouver, has been launched by TransLink. The program, which is part of the Access for Everyone plan, aims to enhance station accessibility and reliability for customers.
TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn emphasized that replacing the 1980s elevators will make transit more reliable and accessible for those with mobility devices, bicycles, strollers, or luggage. The new elevators, once installed, will be more spacious, weather-resilient, and require less maintenance downtime, resulting in fewer breakdowns.
The program will replace a total of 21 original elevators across 15 stations. As of now, two elevator replacements are underway at Nanaimo and 22nd St. stations. The Expo Line Elevator Replacement Program is the next stage in improving the customer experience.
One specific elevator replacement project that has begun is at Pentagon City Station’s elevator (C08X01), which started on July 16, 2025, and is expected to take about two months to complete, indicating a completion around mid-September 2025. However, details about the broader program schedule, timeline, or other Expo Line stations affected by elevator replacements are yet to be announced.
Partial funding for the program comes from the government of Canada's Canada Community Building Fund (CCBF) and the government of British Columbia. The C$32 million (US$23.1 million) investment for the program was approved by the Mayors' Council as part of Phase 2 of the Mayor's 10-Year Vision.
TransLink's recent replacement of 37 original Expo Line escalators paved the way for this program. Elevators will be replaced a few at a time to minimize disruptions for customers. TransLink will seek funds through future investment plans to complete the replacement of additional SkyTrain elevators.
For further details or updates on additional Expo Line elevator replacements, consulting TransLink’s official website or contacting TransLink customer service directly would be advisable, since current publicly available information is limited to the Pentagon City elevator work.
