Transformed agricultural program instigates transformation in value chains within Viñh Long
Vinh Long's Transformation Through the "One Commune, One Product" Program
In the heart of Vietnam, the province of Vinh Long is undergoing a significant agricultural transformation, thanks to the government-driven "One Commune, One Product" (OCOP) program. This initiative aims to elevate local agriculture, preserving heritage and identity while driving rural economic development and competing on the global stage.
One of the key players in this transformation is the Tân Phú Agricultural Cooperative in Ham Luong Hamlet. They manage 250 hectares of land, with 200 hectares certified under VietGAP standards, ensuring good agricultural practices, food safety, and sustainability. The cooperative specializes in durian cultivation and has 301 members. Their durians have already received a four-star OCOP certification, and they aim to achieve the prestigious five-star rating.
Another notable entity is Phat Huy Seafood Processing Co., Ltd., established by Vo Ngoc Be and Luong Thi Chung in Thanh Phong. This company specializes in dried fish and shrimp made from locally sourced marine resources, ensuring their products are free from antibiotics and chemical residues.
The OCOP program encourages producers to tell the story behind each product, refine its identity, and elevate its competitive edge. In Vinh Long, this has led to the development of 1,083 OCOP products rated three stars or higher, created by 625 entities. The province is investing in upgrading these products, helping those rated three stars progress to four, and four-star products to reach the five-star threshold. As of mid-2025, 13 OCOP-certified products in Vinh Long have achieved five-star status.
The program also supports the evaluation and classification of OCOP products, with Vinh Long having 159 certified products conforming to OCOP standards by mid-2025. This exceeds targets and boosts product value and rural income. The program is also helping local producers shift towards integrated value chains, benefiting from enhanced branding, improved packaging, and greater access to e-commerce platforms.
Vinh Long is committed to further developing the OCOP ecosystem, supporting producers in product documentation, raw material zone development, value chain integration, branding, and skills training. The province is also increasing investments in science and innovation, promoting digital transformation, and integrating e-commerce.
To meet evolving consumer expectations, products must meet higher standards of food safety, traceability, and aesthetic appeal. The OCOP program in Vinh Long is a catalyst for modernizing agriculture through technology, improving quality standards, establishing credible product certifications, and linking producers into stronger value chains, thus transforming local agriculture from smallholder fragmented production to organized, market-oriented systems with greater income potential.
The Tân Phú Agricultural Cooperative in Tan Phu Commune is a model for OCOP-driven development. Their commitment to quality, sustainability, and innovation is not only transforming their community but also contributing to Vinh Long's success in the OCOP program. As the program continues to grow and evolve, it is expected that more communities in Vinh Long will follow in their footsteps, driving further agricultural transformation in the province.
