Toyota Reveals Outcome of Inquiry Regarding Model Accreditation Submissions
In a surprising turn of events, Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota Motor East Japan are currently under investigation for a certification issue involving seven models produced since 2014. The investigation was initiated by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism on January 26.
According to Miyamoto from the Customer First Promotion Group, the models in question were mass-produced and sold without going through the correct certification processes. However, it's important to note that in all cases, internal verification confirmed that the performance of the vehicles complied with regulatory requirements.
The certification system employed in Japan, used when mass-producing passenger cars of the same model, verifies whether a product meets established standards, mainly in the fields of safety and environment. The system uses measurement methods in accordance with rules set by national authorities.
The nature of the certification or testing discrepancy, whether it relates to emissions, safety, or other regulatory standards, has not been specified. The models involved in this issue have not been disclosed publicly yet.
Chairman Akio Toyoda has expressed sincere apologies to customers, car enthusiasts, and all stakeholders for this issue. Toyota is working under the guidance of the Ministry to swiftly remedy the situation.
As a result of the investigation, Toyota has decided to temporarily halt shipments and sales of three models currently produced in Japan (Corolla Fielder, Corolla Axio, and Yaris Cross), effective June 3.
The investigation is still ongoing, and the findings were reported to the Ministry on May 31. The Chairman of Toyota Group has assured that they are fully cooperating with the authorities to resolve this matter.
