Clearing snow cost a hefty 7.4 million Euros, according to data revealed. - Total expenditure on winter maintenance amounted to 7.4 million euros

The Landesbetrieb für Straßenbau und Verkehr (LBV) detached a hefty sum of around 7.4 million euros to ensure a slip-resistant winter on slushy roads and bike paths in the northern region. Although the winter was less icy than usual, the early mornings' freezing rain kept the road crew busy.

"Kudos to our 515 road maintainers and external helpers," applauded Transport Minister Claus Ruhe Madsen (CDU) and LBV Director Frank Quirmbach. "They've guided us safe and sound through Schleswig-Holstein this winter season!"

Despite the mild winter, the region witnessed few snowy days. Yet, icy mornings accounted for quite a task for the maintenance crews, with a grand total of 15,700 tonnes of salt and nearly 5,700 tonnes of salt brine spread across roads and bike paths, altogether requiring a massive 15,135 working hours.

The 264 vehicles in play

The roadshow went on with 100 LBV vehicles and 164 vehicles hired from private providers. The bills for salt and salt brine pointed to a whopping almost two million euros. Throw in the deployment of spreading vehicles and equipment, operating costs, and personnel compensation, and you've got a total of 2.9 million euros on the table. When it comes to wages, those working hours sunk a substantial 645,000 euros into the budget. As for the external companies, they reaped a tidy 1.9 million euros.

The winter 2023/2024 spending spree saw a combined consumption of approximately 26,400 tonnes of salt and 10,800 tonnes of brine.
