Tory Leader Kemi Badenoch Unveils Deficit Plan at Party Conference

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch is set to unveil a plan to tackle the UK's public deficit at the party's conference. She aims to build the Tories' credibility in economic policy and draw a clear line with Labour, led by Keir Starmer. Badenoch faces leadership threats, with local elections in May looming.

Badenoch will argue that the Conservatives are the only party trusted to meet the economic challenges of the generation. She will reveal a 'golden economic rule' to reduce the public deficit. The plan involves using half of every pound saved in public expenditure to reduce the UK's public debt, currently at 96.4% of GDP.

Badenoch will claim that Labour's Chancellor Rachel Reeves is 'stealing from our children and grandchildren' with her fiscal policies. She will challenge the Labour government, which faces a potential fiscal hole of around £30bn in this year's Budget. The other half of the savings will be used for growth-focused measures, including tax cuts for businesses and young people.

Badenoch's speech aims to revive the UK economy and regain voters' trust in the Tories' economic policies. Her plan to reduce the deficit and control public finances could shape the party's economic narrative ahead of the next election. However, her leadership may face challenges depending on the results of the upcoming local elections.
