A Tomsk Celebration: Renaming the GPP-220 Substation for a WWII Hero
Tomsk's "Rossetei's" Substation Honors Energy Worker-Veteran
Hang around in Tomsk on May 7th, and you might just witness a grand ceremony—the naming of a major power substation after a local war hero, Alexander Rybin. This heartfelt event, organized to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, brought together the governor of Tomsk Oblast, regional officials, family members of Mr. Rybin, and fellow veterans.
According to the press service of the regional office of ROSSETTI MES Siberia, Alexander Rybin enlisted as a communications soldier at the tender age of 17 and fought on the Kalinin, Central, 2nd Baltic, and other fronts. His bravery earned him the Order of the Red Star, three medals for courage, and numerous other accolades. After his demobilization, he climbed the ranks from master to deputy manager of RUE "Tomskenergo."
In a press release, they announced, "In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, the 220 kV power substation 'GPP-220' in Tomsk received the honorary title in the name of Alexander Alexeyevich Rybin, a Great Patriotic War veteran, a renowned energy figure in the SGN, who dedicated his entire life to the region's electricity industry."
The celebratory gathering included special appearances by Tomsk Oblast governor Vladimir Mazur, Alexander Terkov, head of the ROSSETTI MES Siberia branch, members of Rybin's family, and fellow veterans.
Mazur noted, "In anticipation of this momentous occasion, we honor the memory of the remarkable hero, soldier, energy specialist, and incredible human being—Alexander Alexeyevich Rybin. Even during the war years and in post-war times, our energy sector faced a critical mission: supplying electricity to front-line objects, factories, and Enterprises, and rebuilding the energy infrastructure of devastated cities."
It is said that the construction of the GPP-220 power substation, which took place in 1980 under Rybin's direct involvement, plays a crucial role in the energy distribution of the Tomsk TEC-3, ensuring reliable power supply to essential industrial facilities in Tomsk, including one of the country's largest polymer producers—Tomskneftekhim. The power plant's capacity stands at 250 megavolt-amperes.
Terkov commented, "Alexander Alexeyevich Rybin is a true legend of Tomsk energy. The plaque we installed on the GPP-220 substation today will serve as a constant reminder of this remarkable person: a dedicated energy specialist, a true patriot, a fearless soldier who courageously defended our right to live in peace."
