Traffic Update on Wuhlheide Bridge: Trams Expected to Resume Service from Tomorrow Onwards - Tomorrow's likelihood of trams resuming operations.
Berlin's Wuhlheide Bridge to Reopen for Tram Operations Tomorrow
Following thorough inspections revealing structural instability, the Wuhlheide Bridge in Berlin-Oberschöneweide will reportedly reopen for tram traffic, emergency services, and police as early as tomorrow, Thursday.
The 245-meter-long bridge has been completely closed since last Monday, affecting not only trams but also cyclists and pedestrians. Closed since late April, the bridge has shown signs of deterioration with increasing cracks observed across its entire length. Demolition works began on Saturday, and as of late May 2025, six out of the nine construction sites have been dismantled.
The closure has resulted in extensive disruptions to both road and rail traffic, with several tram lines still experiencing interruptions. On the Köpenicker side, beyond the bridge, trams have been operating independently, isolated from the rest of the network.
Starting tomorrow, the isolated operation is set to cease. Security personnel will manage the passage of emergency, firefighting, and police vehicles and open barriers in case of emergencies to ensure their smooth passage. The Berlin Transport Authority will launch a shuttle service in the morning, with regular operations expected to commence as early as Saturday. Pedestrian and cyclist access is also set to reopen from Treskowallee to Edisonstraße, under the supervision of traffic safety personnel.
The situation caused by the dilapidated Wuhlheide Bridge has been prioritized for immediate attention, with the demolition process ongoing. Details regarding the future of the bridge, whether it will be repaired or replaced, are yet to be confirmed.
The reopening of the Wuhlheide Bridge in Berlin, after thorough inspections and demolition works, will impact not only the city's transportation policy but also the community policy, as emergency services, police, pedestrians, and cyclists will benefit from thebridges reopening. This decision may also influence the city's finance industry, considering the expenses incurred during the bridge's closure and its future reconstruction.
