THW Bavaria Celebrates 75 Years of Service with Special Event
The Bavarian State Chancellery is hosting a special event in Munich to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Technisches Hilfswerk (THW) Bavaria. Around 350 members will attend the reception, marking a significant milestone for the volunteer organisation that has dedicated itself to protecting the local population for decades.
The THW in Bavaria was founded on August 22, 1950, initially to safeguard the local population from wartime hazards and clear post-World War II devastation. Today, it boasts around 16,000 volunteers who generously donate their time to serve the community.
Last year, these volunteers played a crucial role in mitigating the impact of severe flooding in southern Bavaria. They rescued people in distress, pumped out vast amounts of water, ensured power supply, treated contaminated water, managed staging areas, and rebuilt vital infrastructure.
The THW's importance has grown significantly in recent years. Following the Russian attack on Ukraine, it launched its largest-ever logistics operation, procuring aid goods worth over 138 million euros. The organisation has also adapted its focus to support disaster relief efforts in federal states and expand emergency supply and restoration competencies, as seen after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.
In 2021, THW Bavaria volunteers were instrumental in combating flooding damage in the Ahrtal. The organisation has also provided technical assistance abroad, such as in Slovenia and Turkey in 2023.
As the THW Bavaria celebrates its 75th anniversary, it reflects on its rich history and the countless lives it has touched. With around 16,000 dedicated volunteers, it remains a vital force in protecting and serving the Bavarian population, ready to face any challenge that may arise.
