Thriving Opportunities: The Evolution of the Kuban Region's Vegetable Agriculture Sector

Boom in Greenhouse Agriculture Transforms Krasnodar Region

The Krasnodar region, traditionally Russia's leading producer of protected ground crops, is witnessing a significant growth in greenhouse agriculture. More than ten large greenhouse complexes operate in the region, covering over 250 hectares of land.

This thriving sector is thanks to the use of high-yielding vegetable varieties, modern greenhouse technologies, and continuous modernisation. As a result, the region's agricultural product shipment from these cooperatives exceeded 2 billion rubles last year.

The most demanded produce among consumers in the Krasnodar region and other Russian regions are cucumbers, tomatoes, and salads. In an effort to support this industry, special loans are available for vegetable farmers from the Krasnodar Krai Microfinancing Fund. The 'Farmer' program offers loans ranging from 100,000 to 5 million rubles at interest rates from 0.1% to 4.25% per annum.

Grants and subsidies are also available in all areas for farm households, with separate programs for small farms receiving 870 million rubles this year. Since 2015, the region has received over 15 million rubles in financial assistance for greenhouse construction, resulting in a 200-ton increase in vegetable production.

The volume of greenhouse vegetable production in Kuban has doubled over the past 10 years. This growth is evident in the Apcheronsky district, where about 40 thousand square meters of new greenhouses have been constructed since 2019.

Computer-controlled fertiliser application and lighting technologies are increasingly used in greenhouses to improve crop quality and yield. These advancements, along with the implementation of the 'Agrostartup' program, which has provided grants totaling nearly 450 million rubles to over 100 farmers since 2015, are key factors in the region's success.

In addition, work on organising farmers into cooperatives has been activated in the Krasnodar region since 2017, with 160 cooperatives now in existence, uniting nearly 2,500 members. This collective approach has helped to boost productivity and ensure a consistent supply of fresh produce.

The region's efforts have not gone unnoticed. In 2025, the Cuban Farmers' Association (ANAP) received a doubling of subsidies for Cuban farmers designated for building facilities to produce vegetables in green gardens, likely inspired by Krasnodar's success.

The Krasnodar region's commitment to modern agriculture and support for its farmers is evident in the region's continued growth in greenhouse production. With the rate of compensation for farmers' expenses on constructing facilities for growing vegetables in greenhouses set to be doubled by 2025, the future looks bright for this thriving industry.

Moreover, large-scale work has been done in the region's melioration, including the reconstruction of 4 pumping stations and the cleaning of 137 kilometers of irrigation canals since 2020. These improvements will further enhance the region's agricultural capabilities, ensuring a prosperous future for greenhouse agriculture in the Krasnodar region.
