The surge in Intuitive Machines' stock occurred on Wednesday.

Intuitive Machines' stock saw a surprising surge of 9.9% before 12:52 p.m. ET on Wednesday, and it's not even 7:17 p.m. yet! This unusual move might have something to do with the 7:17 p.m. time set for SpaceX's next rocket launch, on which a Nova-C lunar lander built by Intuitive Machines will hitch a ride. If all goes well, the lander, named Athena, will attempt to land on the moon on March 6.

This isn't Intuitive Machines' first rodeo. Exactly a year ago, the company made history with its IM-1 mission, which saw a robotic spacecraft land on the moon for the U.S. for the first time in over half a century. And now, they're trying to do it again.

The Nova-C class vehicle, a.k.a. Athena, is part of the company's IM-2 mission, which is part of NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services project. This project is all part of the Project Artemis endeavor to bring American astronauts back to the moon before the end of this decade.

Now, whether or not Intuitive Machines stock is worth buying is debatable. Sure, a successful IM-2 would cement their position as the go-to landers for spacecraft on the moon. And NASA awarded them $47 million for the mission – a sizeable chunk of their projected 2024 revenue. But is that enough to make it a buy? Maybe. Maybe not. It's a pretty big deal, though.
