US-Thailand Trade and Tax Talks Kick Off with More Proposals Expected

Thai Minister of Finance Initiates Virtual Discussions on U.S. Tax Matters; Face-to-Face Meeting Is Pending.

It's official, folks! The United States and Thailand have started formal trade and tax chats, mainly via online platforms. Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Pichai Chunhavajira, spilled the beans this morning during a meeting at Government House.

"We've put our foot in the game now", Pichai declared, "We've initiated talks at a formal level, starting with digital discussions. Expect more proposals to hit the table this week. Details should be hush-hush for now", he cautioned.

When prodded for a timeframe by the press, Pichai reiterated, "We're talking, submitting our proposals, and tweaking the nitty-gritty. What we've submitted mirrors our previously stated principles."

Don't get too excited about Pichai's travel plans, though. He clammed up like a shell-shocked turtle, putting a finger to his lips, and advised patience. However, he later whispered that in-person jamborees could be on the horizon after the current virtual round.

Behind the Scenes

The ongoing negotiations revolve around shunning a 36% reciprocal tariff on Thai goods by the US, which is on hold under a 90-day ceasefire set to expire on July 9, 2025. The US Trade Representative (USTR) has furnished five key proposals geared towards crafting a fair trade relationship, focusing on:

  1. Tariff measures and quotas
  2. Non-tariff barriers
  3. Digital trade management
  4. Rules of origin
  5. Economic and national security

The Thai team and the USTR locked horns in a virtual battle on June 18, 2025, to iron out these proposals, and Thailand is due to submit its initial response tackling these areas by June 20, 2025. Thailand's negotiators are hopeful of bagging a modest tariff rate, maintaining it below 10% in the final deal.

The Thai negotiation squad is commanded by Wuttikrai Leeviraphan, Permanent Secretary of the Commerce Ministry, and includes officials from the Finance, Agriculture, Foreign Affairs, Industry, Energy, Digital Economy and Society, and Labour ministries.

Once Thailand dishes out its proposals, detailed discussions with the US will carry on. Initial talks are being conducted online, but Pichai hinted that in-person tussles may follow later. As of now, no specific date has been set for any face-to-face ministerial-level throws down.

Fun fact: The US is Thailand's largest export market (18.3% of exports), so these talks could significantly shape tariffs and trade ties between the two nations.
