Thai government introduces four actions to alleviate Thai-Cambodian border issue

The Ministry of Commerce in Thailand has activated urgent and ongoing support measures to help entrepreneurs, farmers, and local citizens affected by the border tensions with Cambodia. The escalating conflict, which began in May 2025 and intensified in July, has caused significant disruptions, including military actions, martial law, and thousands displaced [1][3][4].

To mitigate economic hardships arising from these disruptions, the Ministry is promoting the "Thai-made, Thai-used, Thai-helping-Thai" initiative to boost the domestic economy [6]. They are also working hand in hand with all sectors to overcome the crisis.

The ministry has facilitated 19 agricultural product distribution events, moving nearly 79 tonnes of produce worth over 2.55 million baht [2]. Moreover, border trade fairs have been held five times, giving businesses opportunities to sell over 600 tonnes of consumer goods and fresh produce in markets across Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, and China [7].

In addition, the ministry is promoting Thai goods in Cambodia and other ASEAN markets through online business matchmaking, engagement with importers and department stores, and future trade fairs [8]. They are also directing provincial commerce offices in the seven Cambodian-bordering provinces to strictly monitor the supply and pricing of essential goods [9].

Authorities are restocking items in high demand, such as instant noodles, canned fish, mosquito repellent, and diapers, in cooperation with retailers. Commerce Minister Jatuporn Buruspat, along with Deputy Ministers Suchart Chomklin and Chantawit Tantasith, visited the region to assess the situation and expedite support for affected stakeholders [10].

Jatuporn stated that the Ministry will do everything in its power to support entrepreneurs, farmers, and local communities, ensuring businesses can continue operating, farmers earn fair incomes, and citizens can live safely and securely [11]. They are also working with banks to implement debt relief, working capital support, and long-term loan schemes for affected traders and import-export businesses [12].

While the exact types of support measures are not detailed, they likely involve financial aid, trade facilitation, or logistical support aimed at helping affected entrepreneurs maintain operations despite the instability [2]. For precise programs or financial packages, official announcements from Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce would provide the most accurate and current information.

The ministry has also launched 33 local sales outlets generating over 5 million baht [13]. However, the situation remains volatile, with diplomatic efforts and ceasefire negotiations ongoing [5]. The US Ambassador to Malaysia has urged Thailand and Cambodia to uphold the ceasefire, while China has expressed concerns about the ongoing "Thai Fruits Festival 2025" campaign, stating that it distorts their policies on Tibet, Xinjiang, and Hong Kong [14].

Despite these challenges, the Ministry of Commerce remains committed to supporting its citizens and businesses during this difficult time. As the situation continues to evolve, updates on the support measures and their impact on the affected communities will be closely monitored.

  1. In light of the border tensions and their subsequent impact on the economy, the Ministry of Finance is collaborating with the Ministry of Commerce to devise financial solutions, such as debt relief and long-term loan schemes, for businesses and traders affected by the crisis.
  2. Given the disruptions caused by the conflict, the Thai government is looking to boost its general-news sector by promoting domestic media outlets, encouraging local journalists to cover the unfolding events and their effects on the citizens and business communities.
  3. The Ministry of Business, Industry and Politics recognizes the need for comprehensive solutions to address the challenges faced by farmers and entrepreneurs amidst the crisis, and is, therefore, seeking international partnerships to secure additional resources and support to supplement their ongoing relief efforts.
