Tesla sets new sales milestone in South Korea, Model Y claims top spot for the third month in a row
Tesla Dominates South Korea's Electric Vehicle Market
Tesla has made a significant impact in South Korea's automotive market, particularly in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. In July 2025, the American automaker sold an impressive 7,357 vehicles, making it the top-selling imported car brand in the country for the first time.
The Model Y, equipped with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, has been a game-changer for Tesla in South Korea. For three consecutive months, the Model Y has been the best-selling imported vehicle, with the Model 3 following closely in second place among imported EVs. Together, these models accounted for a remarkable 72% of all imported EV registrations and around 27% of the total imported car market in July.
This dominance in the South Korean EV market is a stark contrast to the challenges Tesla faces in European markets, where competition and local factors have impacted sales. In South Korea, Tesla's market leadership notably accelerates EV adoption amid a growing but still developing EV market.
In June 2025, Tesla sold 6,570 vehicles, surpassing Mercedes-Benz (6,415) and BMW (6,405). The Model Y outpaced the next best-selling import, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, by more than two and a half times. This strong performance in July 2025 follows a record-breaking June, where Tesla topped South Korea's imported car sales leaderboard for the first time.
Tesla's success in South Korea is not just limited to the Model Y. The Model 3 is also performing strongly, contributing to Tesla's continued growth in South Korea's EV sector. In July 2025, the Model 3 ranked second among imported EVs.
The company's strong position in South Korea is due in part to improved supply strategies aligned with consumer demand, increased charging infrastructure compatible with Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS), and the popularity and affordability of the Model Y.
Looking ahead, Tesla is poised to continue its upward trajectory in South Korea's growing EV sector. With its strong market position and continued innovation, it is possible that Tesla could reach sales of around 45,000 vehicles in South Korea, breaking past records.
