Tesla Model Y secures IIHS Top Safety Pick+ for the fifth consecutive year (2025)

The 2025 Tesla Model Y has once again been awarded the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ rating, marking the fifth consecutive year for this achievement. Despite the IIHS implementing stricter safety standards in 2024 and 2025, the Model Y has proven its resilience and commitment to safety.

In the latest IIHS testing, the Model Y excelled in nearly every evaluation, earning the highest "Good" rating in all major crash tests, including moderate overlap front, small overlap front, and side impact tests. This impressive performance demonstrates the vehicle's ability to protect both front and rear occupants in various crash scenarios.

The Model Y is the only vehicle, aside from the 2025 Volvo XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid, to achieve a Top Safety Pick+ rating in 2025. However, it's important to note that the Volvo XC90 T8 only qualified for the rating on models built after December 2024, when safety updates were implemented.

The IIHS tightened its safety standards in 2024, requiring a "Good" rating in the updated moderate overlap front crash test for both Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ designations. In 2025, the standards were further elevated, particularly with the updated moderate overlap front crash test, which now includes a second dummy in the rear seat to measure backseat protection.

The Model Y's crash avoidance and mitigation systems were evaluated and performed exceptionally. In the pedestrian front crash prevention tests, the Model Y's advanced collision-avoidance technology, which comes standard on all trims, demonstrated its effectiveness in both day and night scenarios.

However, the Model Y did not receive a perfect score only in the LATCH ease-of-use evaluation for child seat installation, where it was rated "Acceptable."

The Model Y is the pre-refresh version, with the refresh being model year 2026. The full safety report for the tested vehicles can be found on the IIHS website.

In summary, the Model Y meets and exceeds the IIHS’s 2025 tougher crashworthiness and crash prevention requirements, confirming its position as one of the safest vehicles currently on the market. Its exceptional performance in crash tests and pedestrian front crash prevention tests solidifies its reputation as a leader in automotive safety.

The Tesla Model Y's safety performance, demonstrated in the latest IIHS testing, is not limited to crashworthiness. Its advanced collision-avoidance technology, standard across all trims, also excels in the pedestrian front crash prevention tests, showcasing the vehicle's effectiveness in both day and night scenarios. Furthermore, the Model Y's exceptional scores in major crash tests, including those evaluating the protection of both front and rear occupants, place it among the pioneering vehicles in the technology-driven automotive industry that prioritize finance and transportation safety.
