Tesco's Ambitious Plan to Become 'Zero Carbon' by 2050

Tesco, the UK's largest retailer, is stepping up its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint. The company is using data analysis and innovative technologies to predict and cut energy consumption, aiming to become a 'zero carbon' business by 2050.

Tesco is harnessing the power of data to drive its sustainability goals. It uses historical patterns and business volume fluctuations to predict energy consumption, allowing it to make informed decisions about energy usage. The retailer is also collecting and analysing real-time data about energy consumption in its stores, with over 70% of its electricity consumption now metered.

To engage its staff in the energy-saving effort, Tesco is rolling out a touch-screen system that provides information and tips to reduce consumption. This system will be implemented in all larger stores by the end of 2021. Moreover, Tesco is using waste chicken fat to generate electricity for certain stores, demonstrating its commitment to innovative solutions.

In addition to these initiatives, Tesco is building three giant wind turbines by the M1 motorway to further reduce its carbon footprint. The retailer aims to halve the carbon footprint of its buildings by 2020, aligning with its long-term goal of becoming a 'zero carbon' business by 2050.

Tesco's comprehensive approach to reducing its carbon footprint involves data analysis, innovative technologies, and staff engagement. With specific targets and a clear roadmap, the retailer is well on its way to achieving its ambitious goal of becoming a 'zero carbon' business by 2050.
