Hitting the Brakes in Kazakhstan's Abai Region:

Stricter Speed Limit Enforcement on Highways

It's time to keep your foot off the gas pedal on specific stretches of highways in the Abai region, as indicated by recent reports from our trusted sources like Polisia.kz.

According to police data, sections of republican highways prone to accidents, such as Omsk - Maikapchaagai (733-729 km, 809-814 km) and Almaty - Ust-Kamenogorsk (902-901 km), are now covered in additional measures to reduce accidents.

  • Hitting the brakes: Temporary speed limit signs (90, 70, 50 km/h) have been installed;
  • Looking out for lane changes: Warning signs about lane narrowing have been placed;
  • Shining a light on nighttime driving: Strobe signals, which attract drivers' attention at night, have been applied.

It's also crucial to know that since early April, penalties for speeding have been increased in Kazakhstan. Now, exceeding the speed limit by 60 km/h or more will set you back 40 MCI.

But watch out! Previously, driving on the wrong side of the road meant a 6-month license suspension, and if it caused an accident, a 20 MCI fine or 6-month license suspension was imposed. However, if wrong-way driving leads to an accident now, drivers will have their licenses suspended for 9 months.

The Impact

According to the prosecutor's office, accidents have increased by 67% and injuries by 79% over the past year. The regions of Atyrau, Kostanai, Aktobe, and Jetisu are of particular concern due to their high accident rates, with 72% of fatal cases occurring on highways.
