In the picturesque town of Zwotental, Vogtland, a small station with two tracks has been the centre of a recent disruption. Platform 2, a fixture at the station since 1875, has been closed due to safety concerns and structural deficiencies.
The closure, ordered by the supervisory authority, was prompted by a safety inspection that found the platform to be too narrow, posing potential risks to passengers. As a result, train services have been adjusted, with passengers forced to travel to the next station, Zwota-Zechenbach, wait for the return train, and then go back to Zwotental on track 1. This arrangement adds an extra hour to passengers' travel time.
The responsible rail authorities, including the Vogtland Railway and German Railway, are working together to resolve the issue. Plans for renovation and reconstruction work aim to restore the platform's integrity and ensure it complies with safety regulations. This involves repairing or rebuilding parts of the platform structure, improving surface conditions, and possibly upgrading related infrastructure such as lighting and signage.
However, the information flow from the railway regarding the closure has been criticised as poor. Bertram Zetzsche, spokesman for Pro Bahn, the passenger association in Vogtland, considers the closure to be nonsensical. He has suggested an exception permit that might allow train staff to secure passenger disembarkation, but the responsibility for trained staff to secure the area remains unclear in the proposed solution.
In the meantime, on-site staff are unable to prevent passengers from getting off trains on track 2, with a red and white chain with a bike lock serving as the barrier. Passengers coming from Klingenthal to Zwotental are currently not allowed to get off the train due to the closure of platform 2.
The Vogtland Railway and German Railway are aiming to develop a joint security solution by September to address the platform closure issue. Yet, the passenger association Pro Bahn in Vogtland continues to voice its concerns, urging for a swift and safe resolution to the issue.
Despite the inconvenience, the small station in Zwotental, Vogtland, Germany, continues to serve its community, albeit with a temporary change in travel arrangements. Passengers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and to stay informed about the ongoing renovation work.
