In a significant development for the rail industry in Kazakhstan, Swiss manufacturer Stadler has been contracted to produce 557 new wagons for JSC "Passenger Transportation" over the next decade.

According to Anuar Ahmetjanov, Chairman of JSC "Passenger Transportation", the new wagons are planned to replace the current "Talgo" fleet and will be delivered between 2025 and 2030. The first batch of wagons is set to be launched on four routes next year: No. 3/4 Astana - Almaty, No. 353/354 Astana - Semey, No. 85/86 Astana - Shymkent, and No. 47/48 Astana - Atyrau.

The new wagons will be designed specifically for operation in Kazakhstan, taking into account the country's climate and long distances between cities. They will be equipped with modern air conditioning systems, CCTV, electric heating, and automatic fire suppression systems, ensuring a comfortable and safe journey for passengers. Each compartment will also be equipped with electric sockets and USB ports for mobile phone charging.

The production of these new wagons was announced at a briefing at KTZ. The new wagons will include sleeping, seated, specialized wagons for passengers with special needs, and generator wagons.

In a move that further enhances the comfort and connectivity of the new wagons, Elon Musk's internet is planned to appear in several Kazakh trains.

The factory will provide technical maintenance for the supplied wagons for a period of 20 years. Notably, the manufacturer of the new trains, which will operate on four routes from 2026, is not explicitly stated in the provided search results.

Meanwhile, Kazakhstan is phasing out "Talgo" wagons, with no new purchases planned and existing ones to operate until the end of their service life. The production of "Talgo" wagons in Kazakhstan will cease in 2023.

Currently, 14 "Talgo" trainsets operate on 14 routes, totaling approximately 732 wagons. The transition to the new Stadler wagons marks a new era for passenger transportation in Kazakhstan.
