Speedy journey through Dubai: Reduce travel time from 20 to 6 minutes via novel bridges, tunnels, and bike trails.
Dubai: To accommodate the city's rapid expansion, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced an ambitious upgrade project for Umm Suqeim Street, aiming to smooth traffic flow from Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road. The project, aligned with Dubai's long-term strategy to modernize its road network, is part of a broader master plan that includes enhancements for Jumeirah, Al Wasl, and Al Safa Streets.
The project targets improving quality of life for residents and visitors by easing traffic congestion due to Dubai's rapid population growth. Once completed, the 20-kilometer stretch from Jumeirah to Al Qudra Road will enable seamless travel, complementing ongoing works between Al Khail Road and Emirates Road.
In addition to road improvements, the upgrade will incorporate modern pedestrian walkways, a dedicated cycling track, lush landscaped boulevards, and vibrant public spaces. A new link is planned to connect Mall of the Emirates Metro Station with nearby residential communities, enhancing last-mile connectivity.
Umm Suqeim Street upgrade is not the only focus in this master plan. Further details regarding enhancements to other roads, including Jumeirah, Al Wasl, and Al Safa Streets, will be revealed in upcoming phases.
According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, the project will benefit key residential and business zones such as Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Manara, Al Sufouh, Umm Al Sheif, Al Barsha, and Al Quoz, homes to over two million people. Once completed, the road's capacity will increase to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, reducing travel time between Jumeirah Street and Al Khail Road from 20 minutes to just six.
The project includes several redeveloped intersections, namely:
- Jumeirah Street: A two-lane tunnel in each direction with a signalized junction
- Al Wasl Street: A two-lane tunnel for traffic from Sheikh Zayed Road to Jumeirah Street
- Sheikh Zayed Road: Two bridges to lessen congestion
- First Al Khail Street: A tunnel to carry traffic from Al Barsha to Sheikh Zayed Road
- First Al Khail to Al Asayel: Widened to four lanes each way
- Al Khail Road: Two new flyovers to serve Al Quoz and Deira traffic
These improvements, including four new bridges and three tunnels with a combined length of 4,100 meters, are well underway, with construction progressing swiftly. RTA's commitment to improving traffic flow in Dubai is evident in its ongoing efforts to expand and upgrade its road network.
