SpaceX's industrial hub in Texas is at the verge of establishing a self-contained urban district.
Victory for Elon Musk as Starbase, Texas, Becomes a Reality
Lo and behold, the weekend of May 3 saw American billionaire Elon Musk score another win as his ambitious plan to establish a city around SpaceX's industrial complex in Texas came to fruition. Known as Starbase, this new municipal hub is nestled within the 4 square kilometers of Boca Chica Bay, sharing borders with Mexico.
Over 283 residents, including SpaceX employees and site associates, participated in the vote to transform Starbase. By 8 PM local time, the ballots were sealed, and it was evident that nearly 100% of voters—most of whom had cast their votes in advance—had given their approval. A mere 143 votes were needed to legitimize the creation of the municipality, as per local authorities' request in December. On Saturday, a local official confirmed the exciting news: "Cameron County will soon boast a new addition to its coastal landscape." Upon verification of the poll results by the county, a judge will officially announce Starbase's emergence as a self-governing locality.
Controversy Surrounds Starbase's Birth
In a historic move, a senior SpaceX manager will assume the role of mayor in this newly minted Starbase. The company started conducting rocket tests and launches on the site since 2019 and already manages the infrastructure, including roads, as well as health and education services. The world's richest man, Elon Musk, took to his social media to celebrate the milestone, claiming, "Starbase, Texas, now officially exists!"
However, the creation of the city has sparked debate, with Bekah Hinojosa, co-founder of a local environmental defense group, raising concerns about the environmental repercussions. Hinojosa fears that the development of the city will exacerbate environmental damage in the region.
A Turbulent Past
Hinojosa points to numerous issues, starting with the intense vibrations and explosions caused by Starship testing, damaging nearby homes with cracked foundations and displaced doors. Additionally, she accuses SpaceX of polluting Boca Chica Beach with debris and illegally dumping contaminated water into local waterways, leading to numerous environmental violations. SpaceX has yet to respond to these allegations nor acknowledge the impact on the beach access for local families.
Some fear that the rise of the city will prioritize industry expansion over residents' needs, with crumbling infrastructure and communities struggling in its wake. The Carrizo/Comecrudo Nation is among those opposed to the plans, citing threats to Indigenous heritage.
