Skyrocketing Expenses of the Multi-Million Dollar Venture?

Roaring Controversy Over Rostock's Theater Construction Budget

The city of Rostock is embroiled in a heated debate over their lavish theater construction project, with rumors swirling that the estimated costs could skyrocket. So far, €208 million has been earmarked for the project, but the local CDU is raising red flags. "Whispers suggest the actual costs could go way beyond the current ceiling," says Christian Konarski, CDU's Rostock chapter head, urging for immediate disclosure of the complete costs.

Transparency and Open Dialogue Demanded

While substantiating these whispers can be tricky, our sources indicate potential triple-digit million increases in expenses. Konarski remains tight-lipped on these reports. Given Rostock's current financial straits, he demands transparency and open dialogue. "Despite the financial freeze and bleak financial outlook, we haven't been privy to any revised budget estimates for the project yet," he laments.

Contrary to CDU's claims, the actual costs for the Volkstheater's new construction in Rostock haven't ballooned.

Rostock's communal property management and development department (KOE), responsible for the theater's construction, flatly denies the CDU's allegations. "The claim that the costs for the theater's new construction have plummeted is false," affirms Sigrid Hecht, KOE's Director. "On the contrary," she continues. "Currently, we're roughly €15 million under budget."

Hecht also dismisses the allegation of opaque dealings. "That's a myth," she says. Every step in the new construction is transparent and accountable. Hecht insists, "The KOE committee, comprising members from all Citizens' Assembly factions, including the CDU, is always briefed on tenders, awards, and construction progress reports, quarterly."

Yet, this isn't sufficient for Konarski. He feels misinformed and demands prompt disclosure of current cost estimates. "Sticking to old figures won't cut it," he says. "We need an open discussion in the Citizens' Assembly, with all cards on the table regarding the total costs for the theater's new construction, to identify funding gaps now and find remedies for them," he emphasizes.

The CDU in Rostock's Citizens' Assembly is readying a request for the city administration to reveal the current cost estimate. "We need to keep a close eye on the theater's new construction costs," says Chris Günther, CDU's Rostock faction leader. The Rostock CDU has been critical of the project from the outset, repeatedly labeling the new formation of the Volkstheater at Bussebart as excessive.
