Singapore-based B Lab appoints new Chief Executive Officer

In a significant move for the B Corp movement in Singapore, Brian Selby, a seasoned executive with three decades of experience in corporate roles, has been appointed as the new CEO of B Lab Singapore. Selby, who previously led GE's hydro-electric business across Asia, took up his new position on June 1, 2023.

Selby's arrival comes at a crucial time for businesses worldwide, as they grapple with complex global challenges such as climate change, inequality, and the erosion of public trust. His extensive background in various corporate roles, including regional general manager for GE Renewables and work in GE's plastics and chemicals businesses, will undoubtedly prove valuable in steering B Lab Singapore into its next phase of growth.

The appointment follows a period of 18 months without a CEO, after the departure of Amelie Remond at the end of 2023. Remond's departure led to a restructure of B Lab Singapore, paving the way for Selby's arrival. Sajen Aswani, chairman of B Lab Singapore, expressed confidence that Selby will lead the organization effectively, stating, "Brian will lead B Lab Singapore into its next phase of growth and further champion the B Corp sustainability certification movement in Singapore and the region."

Caroline Seow, co-founder and board member of B Lab Singapore, will continue to support the organization in its mission. The B Corp certification, known for its rigorous standards, has seen a growth in Singapore, with 4 new companies certified since last August. Among the recently certified businesses are online media agency Jolt Digital and Global Green Connect, a sustainability consultancy led by Christina Lee.

As of the current date, there are 57 certified businesses in Singapore and 66 in other Southeast Asia markets. The B Corp certification is one of the toughest sustainability certifications to attain, with only a third of applicants getting certified. B Lab Singapore has set a target of certifying 100 companies by 2025.

Despite the recent changes, B Lab Singapore has experienced some staff turnover, with two business development executives leaving after short stints over the last 18 months. Selby, who began his career as a lawyer, will undoubtedly bring a fresh perspective and renewed energy to the organization. After a sabbatical, he is ready to take on the challenges ahead and contribute to a more sustainable future for businesses in Singapore and beyond.
