Labour Party Presidential Candidate Peter Obi Expresses Concern over Recent Developments in Nigeria, Deeming Them Increasingly Troubling

Slammer! Peter Obi Slams Recent Nigerian Developments as a Threat to Democracy and Economy

Seyi Tinubu, under the handle VeryDarkMan, voices apprehension over the trajectory of democracy in Nigeria; sentiments echoed by Peter Obi.

In a blunt statement via his X account, Peter Obi - the 2023 LP presidential candidate - casts doubt on the direction of Nigeria's democracy and economy. He warns that some actions by security agencies could be setting a dangerous precedent, potentially mimicked by nefarious elements.

Obi's hard-hitting critique centers on the controversial arrest of social media commentator Martin Vincent Otse, aka VeryDarkMan (VDM). The former Anambra State Governor argues that the heavy-handed approach leaves many Nigerians uneasy and raises questions about the impact on Nigeria's democracy, as it touches upon the rule of law and respect for human rights.

"The recent happenings in our nation continue to raise grave concerns about the path we're treading as a democracy. The tension is being aggravated by hardship, and our attitude to the rule of law and human rights isn't making things any better.

"The arrest of Martin Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), even though technically within the legal rights of security agencies, was performed in a manner that left many Nigerians feeling uneasy.

"The use of force, devoid of transparency and civility, closely resembled an abduction, an unnerving method that not only creates fear but also risks being copied by criminals. If Nigerians start to struggle to tell the difference between lawful arrests and unlawful abductions, we'll have lost a fundamental layer of national security and accountability.

"This isn't a new problem. We need to remember that even our respected judges, the last line of defense for justice, have faced similar indignities in recent years. When those who interpret the law are being treated with such disregard, it's difficult for average citizens to believe they'll be protected by the law," Obi wrote.

Impact on the Economy

Beyond the political ramifications, Obi also points out that the economy and business environment may suffer due to such occurrences. Investor confidence might wane, leading to actions that undermine trust in Nigeria's economic climate and jeopardize both local and international businesses.

He suggests that the controversial arrest of VDM and the fallout among GTBank have had severe repercussions in terms of reputation and losses for everyone involved. "Isn’t it possible to civilly and transparently invite Mr. Otse for questioning instead of the dramatic and damaging approach we've seen?" Obi queries.

On the Squabble Between Seyi Tinubu and NANS

In a related comment, Obi expresses concerns about the ongoing battles between Seyi Tinubu and a faction of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). He advocates for the independence of the student leadership body and the freedom of young voices without fear of coercion, silencing, or political manipulation.

"Similarly problematic are allegations involving the so-called 'adoption' of NANS President. This scenario raises significant questions about the autonomy of student leadership and the gradual erosion of young voices in our democracy." Obi stated.

He salutes the vision of a Nigeria where justice prevails without theatrics or abuse, where youth can speak freely, and where institutions function with responsibility and integrity.
