Tesla's sales in Denmark plummeted, with a whopping 56% decrease in the first quarter of 2025. Only 1,549 new Teslas were registered compared to 3,556 in the same period last year, putting Tesla at the tenth spot among car manufacturers in Denmark.

Data from Mobility Denmark reveals a stark contrast in Tesla's sales performance in Q1 2025 compared to the previous year. Ilyas Dogru, an economist at the drivers' association FDM, points to several factors contributing to this decline.

First, Tesla's range includes some models that are starting to feel a bit dated. For example, the popular Model Y, due for an updated version this week, is one such example. Additionally, fierce competition on the electric vehicle (EV) market has intensified with competitors launching better models, lowering prices, and offering superior warranties.

Dogru also suggests another factor: the infamous "Elon Musk effect." As Musk, the owner of Tesla, is a vocal supporter of US President Donald Trump and has expressed support for Trump's Greenland annexation plan, some Danish consumers deliberately avoid Tesla out of political conviction. However, it's difficult to pinpoint the exact impact of this factor.

Interestingly, Denmark isn't the only European market where Tesla has struggled at the start of 2025. Quarterly sales in France, Sweden, and the Netherlands have fallen by 41.1%, 55.3%, and 49.7%, respectively, according to a Reuters report. However, the impact has been significantly smaller in Norway, with sales dropping only 12.5% in the same period.

With overall EV sales in Denmark increasing by 62% year-over-year in Q1 2025[3], it appears Tesla is losing its grip on the market in Denmark, as well as in many other European countries.
