Russia's President Putin and India's Prime Minister Modi celebrate solid bond, face U.S. President Trump's scrutiny

Russia's President Vladimir Putin and India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a phone call on Wednesday, a day after Modi held talks with US President Donald Trump. This conversation, despite the ongoing tension between Russia and the West over the Ukraine news, is a sign of the warm relations between the two countries.

The conversation between Putin and Modi took place amid pressure from the United States over growing economic ties between Russia and India. The pressure includes increased tariffs on India and Western sanctions on Russia. However, the economic ties between Russia and India are growing despite these sanctions. India has become a major purchaser of Russian oil, a move that has raised concerns from the European Union.

Prime Minister Modi expressed his commitment to further strengthening India's Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership with Russia. He also stated that India is ready to make all possible contributions towards a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict. Russia's President Putin, in response, stated that relations between Russia and India are exceptionally trustful and friendly.

The Ukraine conflict was also discussed during the talks between Modi and Trump. The conversation revolved around the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with Trump and Ukraine attempting to cut off Russia's vital energy revenues, which fund Moscow's army and enable it to continue its offensive. Tens of thousands of people have been killed in Ukraine since Russia ordered troops into the country in February 2022.

Meanwhile, the European Union and the Mercosur countries (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay) have recently intensified diplomatic and economic relations by moving forward with a free trade agreement proposed on September 3, 2025. This agreement aims to reduce tariffs and boost exports significantly. Additionally, Poland has increased its military presence by deploying around 40,000 soldiers to its border with Belarus due to perceived offensive military exercises by Russia and Belarus. The US and the EU also advanced economic ties with a new trade deal announced in mid-2025, focusing on reducing non-tariff barriers and enhancing regulatory cooperation.

Millions of people have been forced from their homes due to the conflict in Ukraine. As the world grapples with the consequences of this conflict, the relationship between Russia and India continues to thrive, offering a glimmer of hope for a more peaceful and cooperative world.
