Heading Out? Here's How Russians are Spending Their May Holidays 🎉🎒

Russian holiday spending surges by a third: typical expenditure projected to reach nearly 30,000 rubles.

It's holiday time, and Russians are ready to loosen their wallets. According to a survey by the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VCIOM), Russians plan to spend 27,811 rubles on average for the May holidays, a significant increase from last year. However, who's splurging, and where are they heading? Let's take a closer look.

Seasonal Spending: A Family Affair 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦

Large families are expected to drop a cool 100,000 rubles for their May getaways, while folks in Moscow and St. Petersburg are planning to spend twice the national average at 54,742 rubles per person. So, what's the secret to their holiday savings?

To rest or to Work? 😴💼

Sociologists asked those who plan to rest during the holidays, but not all Russians intend to do so. This year, 18% plan to work during the holidays, and 11% don't plan to rest at all. Last year, the numbers were 22% and 20%, respectively. The more you rest, the more you spend. Go figure!

Workaholics, beware! Muscovites and Petersburgers plan to rest longer than the average Russian, contributing to their higher holiday spending. However, they are the exceptions to the rule, as most Russians prefer to return to work between holidays, with only one in five managing an extended holiday in May compared to one in seven Russians on average.

Location, Location, Location! 🏖️🏰

Planned expenses vary greatly depending on how our citizens intend to spend their holiday. A trip "to another city or village in the country" will cost Russians about 34,500 rubles, while "staying at home" is around 16,000.

Insights

The Krasnodar Region, with popular destinations like Gelendzhik, Sochi, and Tuapse, is the leader in bookings among tourists. Meanwhile, resorts like Yeysk, Taman, and Kuchuguri on the Azov Coast and the Caspian Coast of Dagestan are gaining popularity due to their relaxed atmosphere and affordable prices. Although Crimea attracts some interest, its popularity is relatively low compared to other regions.

Domestic travel is a favorite among Russians, with Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Kaliningrad, and Stavropol being top choices for internal travel. For those who prefer staying local, about half of Russians plan to spend the holidays at home, while 17% will go to cottages or villages. Another 18% are planning barbecues and similar activities.

When it comes to getting there, personal vehicles are the preferred mode of transport, with 48% choosing their own cars, and a rise in demand for car rentals. The use of car-sharing services and renting cars is also increasing, especially during peak holiday periods.

Foreign travel remains relatively rare due to various factors. However, destinations like Turkey, Egypt, Thailand, the UAE, and Abkhazia are popular choices for the intrepid traveler.

So, pack your bags, and enjoy your holidays, Russian-style!
