Sassing Satisfaction: Ukraine's Maritime Drone Heroics

In a daring move that's shaking the world, Ukraine's GUR military intelligence agency declared victory over Russia on Saturday, bragging about the world's first downing of a combat plane by a seaborne drone![1][2] This epic clash went down near Novorossiisk, a bustling Russian port city on the Black Sea.

The military intelligence unit, Group 13, revealed they took down a Russian Su-30 fighter jet on Friday, using a Magura V5 naval drone![1][2] Like a scene straight out of an action movie, the drone locked onto and obliterated the aircraft, leaving Russian pilots high and dry.

Ukraine, the little guy in this fight, has been getting crafty with drones at sea as a way to stand up to its mighty, cash-rich adversary, Russia. These drones are tiny tanks, cheap and agile, wreaking havoc on Russia's Black Sea fleet.[2]

Unfortunately for Ukraine, Russia claimed to have demolished five of their fighter jets in a base strike back in December 2024, using the same type of seaborne drone.[2] However, Russia's Defense Ministry kept mum on the latest Ukrainian claim, leaving the information market buzzing with speculation.

An influential Russian blogger, who goes by Rybar, spilled the beans, claiming the jet was indeed taken down by the Ukrainians, off the coast of Novorossiisk.[3] "The Su-30 naval aviation fighter jet was shot down by the Ukrainian side 50 kilometers west of Novorossiisk. This drone stunt was executed from an uncrewed boat with an R-73 SAM (surface-to-air missile)," Rybar wrote on Telegram.[3] He further confirmed that both pilots ejected and were rescued by civilians.

Novorossiisk's mayor declared a state of emergency on Saturday, after a Ukrainian drone attack damaged a grain terminal and several residential buildings, leaving five people injured.[4]

This drone showdown only adds fuel to the ongoing tensions, as peace talks remain stuck in traffic, with opposing ceasefire proposals from Moscow and Kyiv.[2][4] Stay tuned for more updates in this thrilling game of drone chess!
