In the early hours of May 24, 2025, the chemical combine "Azot" in Novomoskovsk, Tula region, Russia, was targeted in a drone attack, according to Russian media outlets and confirmed by the Center for Countering Disinformation.
Reports indicate that a significant fire broke out at the Novomoskovsk Acron Group "Azot" (NAK Azot) due to the drone attack. Footage from the scene shows smoke near the plant, geolocated to a road leading from the M-4 highway to Novomoskovsk, in the area of the settlement of Mosok. The incident site is approximately 4 kilometers from the facility.
The regional governor confirmed that the attack damaged a tank containing acid at the enterprise. Despite the disruption, tests showed that there was no excessive amount of harmful substances in the air above the permitted concentration.
Safety concerns resulted in the evacuation of residents from nearby areas, including the village of Gricovo. Furthermore, a pipeline carrying natural gas was affected, contributing to the fiery aftermath.
The plant, known as one of the leading domestic producers of ammonia and nitrogen fertilizers, also produces chemicals like ammonium nitrate, methanol, and argon. These substances have potential military applications, including ammonium nitrate in explosives, methanol as a rocket fuel component, and argon's relevance to the defense industry's metallurgy.
