Restructuring expert joins Simpson Thacher from Dechert Hong Kong's closed office
Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, a leading global law firm, has strengthened its Hong Kong office with the addition of Daniel Margulies as a partner. With a reputation for expertise in cross-border restructuring, Margulies brings a wealth of experience to the firm, having navigated significant corporate restructurings in Asia.
Ian Ho, co-head of Simpson Thacher's Asia offices, described Margulies as a commercially minded attorney with extensive experience in the Asia market. Makiko Harunari, head of Simpson Thacher's Asia banking and credit practice, expressed her belief that Margulies' diverse experience would benefit clients in Asia and globally.
Margulies' notable contributions include his role in the complex restructuring processes of Noble Group Limited, a prominent commodities trader based in Asia, and Asia Pulp & Paper Company (APP), one of the largest pulp and paper companies in Asia. In the case of Noble Group Limited, Margulies played a significant part in addressing the company's financial difficulties and safeguarding stakeholder interests, overseeing a restructuring of over $3 billion in debt. His involvement in APP's restructuring efforts helped stabilise the company and manage its extensive debt, enabling ongoing operations and future business viability.
The largest Asian restructuring Margulies was involved in was APP's $14 billion debt restructuring, which was the largest Asian restructuring at the time. Margulies has also advised various clients, including debtor, creditor, financial institution, private equity, and hedge fund clients, on cross-border restructuring and insolvency matters in Asia.
Prior to joining Simpson Thacher, Margulies was a partner at Dechert and worked at Kirkland & Ellis, Ashurst, and O'Melveny & Myers. His diverse work experience spans beyond restructuring to include special situations. With Margulies' addition, Simpson Thacher's Hong Kong partnership expands to 17 members, up from 16 previously.
Adam Furber, co-head of Simpson Thacher's Asia offices, highlighted the firm's successful track record with corporate and private equity clients in Asia. Furber emphasised that Margulies' expertise in handling high-profile, cross-border financial restructurings in Asia would be a valuable asset to the firm and its clients.
