Residents Invited to Shape South Van Dorn Street Safety Improvements
Residents of Alexandria and Fairfax County are invited to participate in an online survey regarding potential safety and traffic improvements along South Van Dorn Street. The survey, available until October 10, includes translation tools for Spanish and other languages.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) launched the STARS (Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions) study in February, focusing on a 2.5-mile section of South Van Dorn Street and three-quarters of a mile of Franconia Road. The study aims to enhance safety, operations, and multimodal transportation along this key corridor, which carries heavy traffic, with vehicle counts ranging from 14,000 to 37,000 daily.
After initial public involvement in March, VDOT has developed improvement alternatives for seven key intersections. These proposals target intersections at South Van Dorn Street and Capital Beltway ramps, South Van Dorn Street and Crown Royal Drive, and other key points. The study is expected to conclude in late 2026, with STARS studies not setting construction timelines but developing improvement proposals for local governments to pursue funding.
The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is responsible for planning and implementing road and transportation projects in Fairfax County. Details and updates on this study can be found on the FCDOT's official website or in county administrative documents.
Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts on the proposed improvements by participating in the online survey or contacting VDOT directly. The study's findings will help shape future transportation enhancements along South Van Dorn Street, benefiting commuters traveling between Alexandria and Fairfax County.
