Region increases bus and rail tickets prices once more
The Verkehrsverbund Oberlausitz-Niederschlesien (ZVON), responsible for public transport in the district of Görlitz and the eastern part of the district of Bautzen, has announced a fare increase of approximately 7% for bus and train rides, effective from August 1, 2025.
This adjustment will affect nearly all ticket types for city and regional transport within the ZVON area. For instance, a monthly ticket will rise from 51 to 52 euros, and the Europastadt single ticket will go from 1.90 to 2 euros. However, short-distance tickets in regional transport will remain at their current price, and group or educational tickets for students will not increase. The prices for day tickets and the cross-border "Euro-Neisse-Ticket" will only see minor increases.
Notably, the new rules for the senior ticket now allow a dog to be taken along free of charge instead of just one child.
Exempt from the fare increase are educational tickets (BildungsTickets), student group tickets (Schülergruppen-Karten), and short-distance tickets in regional transport.
The fare adjustment aims to address rising costs in personnel, energy, and materials. Tickets bought before the price change will remain valid for three more months after August 1, 2025.
It is worth noting that the ZVON is planning to merge with the Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe (VVO) and a uniform fare for all of eastern Saxony is expected soon, although the exact date is still unknown.
For loyal customers, the fare increase is a significant setback, especially at a time when affordable public transport is being discussed. The old tickets will remain valid for another three months.
All information about the changeover can be found on the ZVON's website.

- Other businesses, particularly those in the finance and transportation industries, might face similar challenges due to the rising costs in personnel, energy, and materials, as evidenced by the Verkehrsverbund Oberlausitz-Niederschlesien's (ZVON) fare increase for public-transit.
- Differences in fare pricing between public-transit systems across various regions can impact the competitiveness of local businesses, as demonstrated in the announcement of the ZVON's fare increase for city and regional transport.
- Collaboration between public-transit systems, such as the expected merger between the ZVON and Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe (VVO), could lead to potential synergies and uniform pricing structures that could bring benefits to both businesses and residents within the newly integrated area.
