New Nissan Micra and Renault 5 Twin Electric Cars Share Similarities but Stand Out in Key Areas

Refashioned Nissan Micra aligns with Renault 5's cost at £22,995

The new electric Nissan Micra and its Renault 5 twin share many key features, platforms, and specifications, but they also exhibit distinct styling and some feature differences.

Shared Features and Specifications

Both cars are built on the Ampr Small platform and offer battery options of 40kWh LFP (192-198 miles range) and 52kWh NMC (260 miles range). Rapid charging is available up to 100 kW (52kWh model), 80 kW (40kWh), with 15-80% charge achieved in approximately 30 minutes. Both cars also have comparable AC charging rates.

Under the hood, both cars feature a single front-mounted motor with similar performance. The suspension setup is also similar, with MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension, tuned with Nissan input for the Micra.

Unique Styling and Features

The Nissan Micra stands out with its distinctive styling, featuring large circular headlights and tail-lights, and door indents inspired by "the mark left by a spoon in ice cream." The Renault 5's styling is more traditional for the model, with some shared elements like rear pillars.

The Micra offers a two-tone paint scheme standard on higher trims and premium features such as a Harman Kardon sound system, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. Nissan has integrated Google-based connectivity deeply, including onboard Google Maps with EV charger availability, voice assistant, and Google Play store for apps.

Pricing and Availability

The Micra’s top trim is slightly more expensive than the equivalent Renault 5 top trim. The base model of the Nissan Micra, in Engage trim, is priced at £22,995, while the mid-level Advanced trim is £24,995. The top-tier Evolve trim, which is only sold with the 52kWh battery, is priced at £29,865.

Order books for the new Nissan Micra will open on 1 September, and the car is expected to qualify for the £1500 discount under the UK government's new Electric Car Grant (ECG).

Upcoming Nissan EVs

Four new Nissan EVs are expected to be released before the end of 2026, including the new Leaf crossover, an electric Juke, an A-segment model, and a model twinned with the upcoming Renault Twingo.

In essence, both cars are very close technically, offering roughly equivalent range and charging speeds. The main points of differentiation lie in styling, interior tech details, features available in trims, and some tuning nuances aimed at brand character. The new Nissan Micra is electric only and aimed at younger, European buyers. The new Nissan Micra will go on sale in September.
