Reduced Manufacture of Crucial Industrial Goods in Kamchatka
In a recent report, Kamchatka Krai has revealed a 7% decrease in industrial production during the first four months of 2025, compared to the same period in 2024 [1][3]. The primary cause of this decline can be traced back to last year's unsuccessful salmon season.
The fishing industry, a key sector in Kamchatka’s economy, was significantly impacted by the poor salmon catch. The low salmon yields in 2024 led to a reduction in fish processing and related industrial activities, contributing to the overall decline in industrial output [1][3].
The failure of the salmon season meant fewer raw materials for fish processing plants, directly leading to lower production volumes. Although there was a surge in fishmeal exports in 2025, this increase was primarily linked to other fish species rather than salmon, and did not compensate for the salmon-related industrial downturn [1][3].
Several other sectors also experienced a decrease in production. Concrete production decreased by 14.3%, while confectionery production decreased by 14.1%. The production of meat semi-finished products dropped by 56.1%, and fish and shellfish processing decreased by 7.0%. Sausage products production decreased by 7.2%, and milk production decreased by 4.9%. Baked goods production also saw a decrease of 6.1% [1][3].
However, there was one positive note. The production of sand and gravel mixture and other common minerals was the only product with increased production compared to the same period in 2024 [1][3].
Kamchatka Krai has published reference data on industrial production for January-April 2025, and the "Release of Key Products" section showed a negative trend in most areas [2]. The data underscores the significant impact of the unsuccessful salmon season on Kamchatka Krai's industrial production.

The poor salmon season significantly impacted the fishing industry, a key sector in Kamchatka’s economy, leading to a reduction in fish processing and related industrial activities, contributing to the overall decline in industrial output. Furthermore, the decline in fish and shellfish processing could be linked back to the finance sector, as the revenue generated from the fishing industry might have been considerably reduced due to the poor salmon catch.
