The Indian gaming industry has reached a new milestone, with a record Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) of $43.9 billion in fiscal year 2024. This represents a 4.6% increase over the previous year's revenue of $41.9 billion[1][2][3].

This growth is a testament to the resilience and strong tribal leadership dedicated to preserving and expanding tribal gaming as an economic engine[1][2]. The revenue is derived from 532 independently audited gaming operations owned by 243 federally recognized tribes across 29 states[1][2].

All eight NIGC regions showed gains, with Oklahoma City and Washington, D.C. leading double-digit growth. Sacramento reported the highest revenue at $12.1 billion, followed by Washington, D.C. at $10.2 billion, St. Paul at $5.2 billion, and Portland at $4.7 billion[2]. The industry’s growth outpaces previous years, with FY 2024 nearly doubling the growth rate seen in FY 2023 (4.6% vs. 2.4%)[2].

The gaming revenues play a vital role in supporting tribal sovereignty and self-governance[1][2]. Revenues enable critical investments in job creation, infrastructure development, education, healthcare, social welfare programs, and community services that improve overall tribal economic conditions and well-being[1]. Tribal gaming is regarded as an essential economic driver that enhances tribal governance capacity and resilience[1].

The National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) oversees the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act’s implementation, ensuring integrity through strong governance and sound regulation[1]. GGR figures are collected and audited annually to monitor industry trends, support regulatory decisions, and guide policy development promoting transparency, tribal sovereignty, and long-term industry success[1][5]. The NIGC collaborates with tribes and regulators to maintain compliant operations while fostering growth and protecting tribal interests[1].

Sharon Avery, NIGC’s Acting Chairwoman, expressed her excitement about the latest announcement, highlighting the resilience of the tribal gaming industry and the dedication of tribal leadership in preserving and growing it[4]. Jeannie Hovland, NIGC’s Vice Chair, emphasized the positive impacts of tribal gaming, supporting tribal sovereignty, job growth, infrastructure, education, and social, health, and welfare programs[4].

The NIGC recently released a report detailing the performance of the Indian gaming industry[4]. The report measures GGR by subtracting the winnings returned to the players from the amount wagered by them[4]. Full regional breakdowns and detailed reports are publicly available through the NIGC's official website[5].
