The Doventor intersection in Bremen, identified as a potential conflict zone and a sensitive junction for car drivers, is facing delays in its redevelopment. According to the ADAC Weser-Ems and the ADFC, the intersection is a significant point in the city's traffic network and requires prompt redesign.
The Traffic Development Plan 2025 (VEP) includes the redevelopment of the Doventor intersection. However, the progress has been slow due to funding issues and the complexity of finalising detailed design plans that cater to all technical, environmental, and community requirements.
Coordination with various stakeholders and adjustments to evolving traffic demands have also contributed to the delays. The intersection's long wait time is attributed to the coordination of traffic-dependent traffic light control with car traffic and the priority of public transport at intersections.
Senator for Transport Özlem Ünsal's spokesperson, Aygün Kilincsoy, has acknowledged that the intersection's design has not adequately considered the needs of cyclists and pedestrians in the past. The traffic department has also acknowledged the significant shortcomings for pedestrian and bicycle traffic at the intersection area.
Four years ago, a status analysis found that the bike paths at the intersection were "too small" and the intersection was "unclear". The Bremen General German Cycling Club (ADFC) has identified cramped space conditions on the bike path as a result of car-centric traffic planning over the decades.
Three reconstruction variants for the intersection were tested: comprehensive rebuild, smaller improvements, and a variant oriented towards the existing situation (which includes removing one lane to improve conditions for cyclists). A decision on the reconstruction variant is still pending.
Clarification on the boundary conditions is expected in the fall. Once clarified, a more detailed planning elaboration will take place, followed by local authority involvement. The start date for the rebuild is currently unknown.
- Due to the unmet needs of cyclists and pedestrians at the Doventor intersection, it is crucial for the Traffic Development Plan 2025 (VEP) to also consider the requirements of other industry sectors like cycling and pedestrian transport.
- As the Doventor intersection serves as a significant point in the city's traffic network, delays in its redevelopment could potentially impact not just car drivers, but also various industries such as finance (due to travel delays affecting business schedules) and transportation (service disruptions for public transit and cycling routes).
